Bucket List Antarctica (during an eclipse): Birdwatching at Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve... and a few other things

Brazil was beastly but Buenos Aires the best. Not Tiffany's, but almost.

The view from our hotel roof

Here's a not very juicy tidbit you may NOT know about Paul. We all know he loves fine dining, but something he NEVER misses is breakfast. He loves it and especially eggs. In fact, you can feed Paul eggs anytime and he will actually SMILE! So he thought it would be a good idea to start our last full day in Buenos Aires on the rooftop of our hotel at brunch. We did get a good view of the city and a fancy brunch.

And I thought it would be a good idea (since I usually don't eat breakfast) if we went somewhere and walked off all those calories.

The far eastern edge of Buenos Aires is home to the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve

There is a large ecological reserve with a 6 mile loop trail on the Rio Plata (which reaches into the Atlantic Ocean). It's a good walk and there are two lagoons that are home to wading birds.

Welcome to the reserve! It had a lot of visitors on Saturday.

A look out at the not overly gorgeous Rio Plata.

A rufescent tiger heron ate a snake while we watched.

We really enjoyed getting a nice long walk and the birds were fun to watch.

Paul fell in love with this one--the kiskadee. He watched it through binoculars for awhle. Then lucky for us, the bird followed us around for quite a while!

It was a good thing we skipped lunch. But we did go for a beer on the docks at the Penon de Aguila Brewery. It was a hot day (not like where we are headed!) and we enjoyed the cold brew!

Cold brews and people watching!

For our last dinner in Buenos Aires, Paul selected a small vegan restaurant, Sacro,  in the Costa Rica neighborhood. This area was quite different than Recoleta and most of downtown and had a much younger vibe. The food was really tasty and I think the staff were surprised to see two older Americans this far out of the city center.

Vegan or not--the classic combo. Chocolate and Vanilla

It was a fun walking, birdwatching  and food-filled day! I'm not sure 8 miles was enough to combat the calorie count, vegan or not!

“Every bird at the marsh filled us with a little light. I wondered if I was just so simple that this was all it took. But then I thought, I'm lucky that this is all it takes..."

Paul's Ponderings:  A wonderful last day in Buenos Aires for now....it was quite warm, involved food as always, some hiking, and generally having a good time.    I had not realized Sacro was so far out of the center of town but it worked out for the best both food wise and fun wise.  The space was unique and the food was vegan-centric, which we needed after some heavier tasting menu dining earlier in the week at Aramburu and Chila....and never mind Roux; no tasting menu but still great food that was filling.    Tomorrow we head south to Patagonia and Ushuaia in particular, which the weather person says will be quite cold and possibly with light snow.   Stay tuned for updates on that.   But, we'll be back to Buenos Aires on our return, so there will probably be one more entry on that topic coming in a few weeks!
